DO THE HEADLINES TELL THE WHOLE STORY?
Our answer is NO. In the last two days the Star-Banner has published two headlines, leaving the reader to believe that our current County Commission is fighting to lower your taxes. Take a look at Exhibit A, today’s editorial bearing the headline, “The county’s gamble on lower taxes.” All this really means is the County Commission voted to approve the lower of the two tax INCREASES.
Exhibit B, yesterday’s headline read, “Payton, Fitos lose bid for higher tax rate.” They didn’t lose anything. The taxes still went up – just not as high as they wanted them. On the jump page is the real story, “In the end, commissioners voted 4-1, with Payton dissenting, to raise the countywide tax rate from 3.49 mills to 3.89 mills. One mill equals one dollar of tax for every $1,000 of taxable property value.”
That’s an 11% increase in your county-wide property taxes. Ray Strickland believes you do not raise taxes in a struggling economy when the people are hurting and in need of good jobs.
